God’s Will

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”

(Romans 12:2)

What is God’s will? This is one of the most asked questions by anyone who studies the Bible.

The Bible is very clear that we are to seek and follow the will of God, but how are we to know what that is?

When Jesus spoke of being born again, he obviously didn’t mean we have to go back into the womb and start over. Being born again is a metaphor for the spiritual transformation that results from salvation.

Salvation simply means that we’ve chosen to reject the worldly path, and to follow the ways God has laid out since the beginning of time — love, peace, kindness, patience, self-control, and so on.

Once we are saved from the sinful path of the world, and we begin to live out the noble path of Christ, as Jesus taught, the inevitable outcome is that our minds are renewed. We’re no longer motivated by selfish and material desires, but instead we seek to be kind, loving, compassionate and selfless. We are transformed.

While that process may be quick or slow, it will always come, if we genuinely and sincerely seek to follow Jesus, learn what he taught, and apply it in our own lives.

It’s been said that the will of God is whatever is in front of us, and to fulfill God’s will, we just act from that moment in love and grace. Each circumstance and situation is an opportunity to be the hands and feet of God, by being kind, loving and generous.

When we do, we are living in the will of God.
